iPod が普及し、iTunes Music Store が流行ると Sony が Walkman 以来築いて来た携帯 AV 機器市場での王者の地位がゆらぐ... というシナリオを語りたがる人が最近多いし、自分もそれに共鳴する部分が多かったが、今朝苦労して手に入れた Sony PSP (Play Station Portable) の UMD Demo ディスクで、美しい映像を見せられてこのシナリオを疑う姿勢も重要かもしれない、とふと気付かされた。 Sony は従来の Walkman の延長線上で MP3 対応など技術の Open Standard 対応を達成する事で蘇るのでは無く、PSP をベースとする独自の UMD ROM のコンテンツビジネスでの再生、技術囲い込みビジネスを今後更に強く志向する事で王者に返り咲こうとしているのかもしれない。
