iPodがリッピングにPCを必要とするのは、コンセプトから来る必然である。リッピングおよびライブラリの構築・管理のためにPCを必要とする。これはiTunes＝iPodコンセプトの強みであり、最大の弱点でもある。言うまでもないが、PCが生活に根付いていない層には「iPodブーム」は及ばないのだ。

だが、一方で、ソニーはこれまで「MDのくびき」から逃れられずにきた。メモリースティックの失敗、iPodに対する敗北の原因の1つが、自らの生み出したMDに引導が渡せなかったところにあるのは間違いないだろう。音楽ケータイもまた「MDへの配慮」から他のオーディオ分野と連携できなければ、あえてiPodが得意とするフィールドでのみ戦うことになる。これはソニーにとって分の悪い勝負であり、音楽ケータイの裾野を広げる上でもマイナスだ。
