米Yahoo!は10日、会費制の音楽サービス「Yahoo! Music Unlimited」のベータ提供を11日に開始すると発表した。他社サービスに比べて割安であるうえに、Yahoo! IDとも統合されていることが大きな特徴だ。
Yahoo! Music Unlimitedの利用料金は年額59.88ドルで、月額換算で4.99ドルに相当する。月単位で会費を納める場合には月額6.99ドルとなり、いずれの場合にも7日間の試用期間を設けている。同様のサービスとしてはNapsterやRealNetworksによるRhapsodyなどがあるが、4ドル台に設定したYahoo! Music Unlimitedはかなり安価な価格設定と言える。
- ■米Yahoo!、他社より安い音楽サービスを立ち上げ / ITmedia
Yahoo!のサービスで提供される楽曲は、Windows Media Audio（WMA）形式で192Kbpsでエンコードされ、ほかのサービスに引けを取らない音質となっている。Microsoftの最新デジタル権利管理（DRM）技術「Janus」をサポートするメディアプレーヤーに楽曲を転送することもできる。
Janus対応のメディアプレーヤーには、iRiverのH10、DellのDJ、Creative TechnologyのZen Microなどがある。メディアプレーヤーの中で最も人気の高いAppleのiPodはMicrosoftの技術をサポートしていない。
