ポッドキャスティングがメインストリームに向けて1歩前進した。
米Apple Computerは6月27日、人気の音楽ソフトiTunesの新バージョンを発表した。これには、ポッドキャスト――誰でもダウンロードできるようにインターネットに投稿されるラジオ番組などの音声番組――を簡単に見つけて聞くことができるディレクトリが追加されている。風変わりでバラエティーに富んだテーマのポッドキャストが個人からも多数投稿されているが、数万件ある番組の中から好みのものを見つけてデジタルオーディオプレーヤーにダウンロードするのは、必ずしも容易ではない。
ポッドキャストディレクトリ――インターネット上の音声番組用「テレビガイド」のようなもの――を使うと、ポッドキャストをAppleのiPod音楽プレーヤーにダウンロードする作業も簡単になる。Appleは先月、ポッドキャストディレクトリを提供する計画を明らかにしていた。

アップルコンピュータは、Podcastingメニューが追加されたカラー液晶ディスプレイ搭載の新型「iPod」を6月28日より順次発売を開始する。アップルストアの標準価格は20GBモデルが32,800円、60GBモデルが45,800円。合わせて、Podcasting対応の音楽管理ソフト「iTunes 4.9」が公開された。
