iTunes Music Store（iTMS）における購入した曲ファイルはFairPlayというアップルがつくったDRM（Digital Rights Management、著作権管理技術）で無制限にコピーされないように保護されています。
iTMSが日本で8/4に開始されてから、アップルがiTMSで販売している曲にかけられているこのDRMが自社のiPodでしか購入した曲を聞かせない、iPodを買わせるための囲い込みだ！という論調の発言をあちこちで目にするようになりました。
「iTMSという音楽配信における素晴らしいショップがあって、私はそこで曲を購入したのに、自分が持っている携帯音楽プレーヤーにはそのまま曲を転送して聞くことはできないというのは何事だ！」
てな具合にです。
iTMSが始まる前にも、国内の音楽配信サービスはいくつも開始されていたにもかかわらず、なぜそこではこのような声は上がらず、iTMSでは上がるのか。
